Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice supports the mucosa of the stomach. Additionally, in the deglycyrrhizinated form of licorice, glycyrrhizin (a compound associated with high blood pressure) has been removed from the extract.
Licorice has also been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine to treat conditions like tuberculosis and diabetes. Glycyrrhizin and flavonoids, two major substances found in licorice, exhibit anti-inflammatory attributes and interfere with the breakdown of the cortisol produced by the kidneys. In test tube studies, the flavonoids of the licorice plant have been shown to eliminate Helicobacter pylori, the bacteria which can cause ulcers in the gastrointestinal tract as well induce stomach inflammation.
Liquiritin, an extract of licorice, has been used in the treatment of melasma, a pigmentation disorder of the skin.
