Maintaining good eye health is a prime concern, particularly as we age. Free radical damage can become apparent in the eyes through the development of cataracts or macular degeneration. Vitabase Vision Support is designed to provide key nutrients known to help support eye health.
Vitamin A (beta carotene), lutein and lycopene all belong to a group of chemicals called carotenoids. In plants, carotenoids are responsible for their color. The carotenoids are important to our health because of their antioxidant properties.
Lutein and another carotenoid form the pigment in the center of the retina. Studies indicate lutein may be critical to healthy vision and preventing disease like cataracts and macular degeneration.
Lycopene, like lutein, has been shown to be central to eye health. Low levels of lycopene in the blood point to increased risk of developing macular degeneration.
Bilberry became popular during World War II when U.S. and British pilots discovered their night vision improved after including bilberries in the diet. Bilberries are high in flavonoids called anthocyanosides. These increase enzyme and substances in the eye that are important for good vision and eye function.
They appear to work particularly well in the retina and have been used in treating retinopathy. Bilberry is also commonly used to support of glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration.
Grape Seed Extract is a great source for powerful antioxidants known as oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC’s). OPC’s are highly effective antioxidants that scavenge free oxygen radicals more effectively than Vitamins C and E. Studies have shown OPC’s to be effective in limiting cataract progression and in treating/preventing glaucoma and other types of retinal disease.
Quercetin is also a flavonoid with antioxidant properties. Its ability to scavenge free radicals contributes to the prevention and treatment of several eye disorders.
N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) is a form of the amino acid cysteine. NAC helps break down mucus and detoxify the body. Early studies indicate NAC may help prevent development of cataracts and macular degeneration.
