The B-complex of vitamins is comprised of 8 water-soluble vitamins. Together they play a vital role in energy production in the body. Vitamin B-6, also called pyridoxine, is particularly important to nerve and muscle cell health. It helps production of RNA and DNA. Together with vitamins B-12 and B-9, pyridoxine helps control blood levels of homocysteine. Homocysteine, an amino acid, has been linked to heart disease and increased risk of stroke.
Vitamin B-6 has also been suggested for use in several other areas. Some studies indicate it may help reduce the severity of nausea during early pregnancy. Vitamin B-6 is an important nutrient for preventing osteoporosis. Several studies seem to show vitamin B-6 to be effective when taken for symptoms of PMS, especially depression.
