Goldenseal is often combined with Echinacea to help shorten the duration of colds and flu. Goldenseal is a perennial North American plant found in a large portion of the United States. It has been a main staple of Native American medicine with multiple uses both internally and externally. It has been called the “poor man’s ginseng.” The root, or more accurately the rhizome, of the goldenseal plant is the part most often used in medicinal applications. The herb has shown great effectiveness in treating the inflammation and infection of the mucous membranes lining the upper respiratory tract.
Traditionally goldenseal has been used for a wide variety of scenarios. Its anti-bacterial properties show benefit against amoebic infections. Considered a natural antibiotic, herbalists often recommend it to strengthen the immune system. It is antiseptic, diuretic and acts as a mild laxative and internal body cleanser. Goldenseal has been used in the treatment of peptic ulcers. Because of its diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties it may help lower blood pressure.
