Acetyl L-Carnitine (also known as Acetylcarnitine, acetyl L-carnitine, acetyl L-carnitine, or L-acetylcarnitine) is a form of L-Carnitine, but more bioavailable. Acetyl L-carnitine functions on several necessary levels in the human body. Acetyl L-Carnitine transports necessary nutrients into cells for energy production, yielding the energy molecule ATP. Without carnitine, fatty acids are hindered in their attempt to enter mitochondria to produce energy. Likewise, the acetyl group of acetyl L-carnitine aids in the formation of acetyl-CoA, a very important link in processing energy from amino acids, fats, and carbohydrates, and is used to make the necessary brain chemical acetylcholine. As an antioxidant, Acetyl-L-Carnitine protects neurons from damage caused by superoxide radicals. Some studies suggest that acetyl L-carnitine may act as a neurotransmitter.
