Chemically known as beta-aminoethanesulfonic acid, Taurin is sulfur-containing amino acid. Taurine is found in most cells and is essential in the metabolism of amino acids methionine and cysteine. Taurine works as an antioxidant against the hypochlorite that is secreted from the leukocyte cells. Taurine helps to regulate the proper concentration of ions in cell (osmoregulation).
Taurine maintains membrane stabilization, cellular growth, sperm motility, neurotransmission and bile acid conjugation. Taurine may boost athletic performance by its ability to act as an insulin mimic and ensure deposition of glucose into muscles after strenuous activity. Taurine is utilized in the absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins. It may help to regulate the heart beat and prevent the over-exertion of brain cells. Some have found it to be beneficial in protecting against congestive heart failure.
