Amino acids are critical in the body since they form proteins that are the building blocks for many body tissues, including muscles. Glutamine is the body’s most abundant amino acid. Typically the body is able to produce enough glutamine on its own, but when the body is subjected to great physical stress, the need for glutamine may outpace the body’s production ability.
Glutamine is important to an optimal immune system since several types of important immune cells rely on it for energy. Research also suggests that when glutamine levels fall, other systems may be affected, particularly the digestive system. Glutamine levels may be depleted by injury, surgery, infection or prolonged stress.
Research indicates glutamine may prove beneficial in several situations. Because it is key to a properly functioning immune system, glutamine deficiency may slow wound healing. This is because stress on the body from the wound releases cortisol, which in turn depletes glutamine. Early research has shown positive effects of glutamine on inflammatory bowel disease, also known as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease. It has demonstrated effectiveness in healing intestinal cells and improving diarrhea.
Athletes may also benefit from taking glutamine. Athletes who overstress their muscles decrease glutamine levels and often find themselves more susceptible to infections and slow healing from injuries.
