Vinpocetine, a compound derived from the Periwinkle plant, has been used in Europe for over twenty-five years, mainly for the treatment of disorders of the brain. Numerous clinical trials and laboratory studies have been conducted to test the efficacy of vinpocetine, and, although a lot more work needs to be done, it appears that this natural supplement does have an important role to play in the treatment and/or prevention of several brain disorders and degenerative conditions.
The main claims being made for vinpocetine in the area of brain health are that it increases cerebral blood flow, acts as a dilator of cerebral blood vessels, inhibits the stroke-causing aggregation of blood platelets, enhances the uptake of oxygen and glucose by brain neurons, improves cognition in healthy individuals as well as those with impaired function and reduces the cell death that normally occurs when a brain region is temporarily deprived of blood flow. In 1991, 203 dementia patients were studied in a multi-center, double-blind trial at the University of Surrey (England). Statistically significant improvements in cognition were found to have occurred in the group taking vinpocetine, as compared to the placebo group.
A similar study conducted on 82 patients suffering from chronic cerebral dysfunction also found that vinpocetine-supplemented patients consistently fared better in cognitive tests than those patients who were given a placebo.
Brain function among the healthy can also be improved by taking vinpocetine: A three-day randomized, double-blind trial found that a significant improvement in memory occurred in volunteers who had taken the supplement.
A study by Vamosi and colleagues in 1976, demonstrated that vinpocetine was effective in restoring impaired metabolic functioning in 143 patients with various cerebrovascular diseases. Karpati and Szporny (1976), in separate studies of dogs that were anesthetized and cats that were subjected to repeated bouts of reduced brain-oxygen level, found that vinpocetine was able to increase cerebral energy production, even under low oxygen or reduced brain activity conditions.
Olpe et al (1985) found that vinpocetine was one of the most effective activators of a particular type of neuron (locus coeruleus) that declines in number as people age. It is known that the reduction in quantity and activity of these neurons is a factor in the reduced cognitive ability of the aged; therefore, vinpocetine could be of great assistance in maximizing the potential of the remaining neurons.
Our formula also includes gotu kola. Known for centuries in India and Indonesia, gotu kola’s active ingredient is called triterpenoids. Gotu kola is believed to enhance brain and peripheral circulation.
