History and Usage:

Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) is a natural sweetener free of the harmful qualities of both sugar and its chemically-engineered substitutes. Also called sweetleaf, this herb is a nearly calorie-free, low glucose food that does not adversely affect glycemic levels. Sugar (pure glucose) can contribute to high cholesterol as well as to fluctuations in mood. Stevia, with a longer-lasting flavor than sugar, possesses the same sweetening effect without the negative health consequences. Further, it does not contribute to tooth decay. These Stevia packets (containing about a half teaspoon each) provide convenient access, especially useful while away from home (when sugar and artificial sweeteners are often the only options available).
