Cat’s Claw, also known as Una de Gato, is a large woody vine native to the Amazon rainforest of South America. It has long been used by natives to treat a variety of ailments including intestinal complaints, asthma, arthritis, diabetes, fevers and rheumatoid arthritis.
Research into the use and efficacy of Cat’s Claw began in the 1970’s but gained widespread attention when studies in the 1990’s showed it to be a possible treatment for immune system diseases as well as other ailments.
Cat’s claw’s active elements include alkaloids, triterpenes, phytosterols and proanthrocyanidins. Researchers have isolated unique alkaloids in Cat’s Claw which stimulate the immune system by increasing white blood cell activity.
The anti-inflammatory properties of Cat’s Claw have proved to be effective in relieving stiffness and swelling often associated with arthritis, rheumatism and joint pain. A 2002 Austrian study found Cat’s claw significantly reduced joint tenderness and swelling in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
Other studies have indicated that the immune boosting properties of Cat’s Claw may have positive impact for treating certain immune system diseases. Cat’s claw’s antioxidant ability helps reduce free radicals responsible for damaging cells.
