In recent years scientists have come to more fully understand the process and implications of free radical production in the body and the importance of antioxidants to combat their damage. Technically, a free radical is an atom with at least one unpaired electron. Because of this, they can easily attach to other atoms resulting in a chemical reaction. Too many of these reactions can result in damage.
Excessive production can result from environmental stresses like tobacco smoke or pollutants, exposure to radiation (including the sun) or high fat diets. Free radicals are neutralized in the body by antioxidants, a group of vitamins, minerals and enzymes that counteract the production of free radicals.
By destroying free radicals, antioxidants detoxify and protect the body. Antioxidant Boost contains a number of important antioxidants.
Vitamin C not only works as a strong antioxidant but also protects other antioxidants like vitamin E. Vitamin C may be particularly helpful in protecting the cells of the brain and spinal cord from free radical damage. Citrus Bioflavonoids work synergistically with vitamin C, maximizing its benefit by inhibiting its breakdown in the body. Bioflavonoids are a large class of antioxidants and are most effective when taken with vitamin C.
Vitamin E works to prevent oxidation of lipids that compose cell membranes. Selenium works synergistically with vitamin E. In addition to helping vitamin E, Selenium is important in the production of the key antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which targets harmful hydrogen peroxide converting it to water.
One of the most powerful antioxidants for fighting free radicals, grape seed extract, is 20 times more potent than vitamin C, and 50 times more potent than vitamin E. Grape seed extract contains high levels of oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC's), antioxidants which can diminish the effects of free radicals.
OPC’s are water-soluble making them easily absorbed by the body. They are also able to cross the blood-brain barrier helping to provide antioxidant protection for the brain and nervous system.
