Lutein is generally available in the diet and is currently being studied. Indications are that lutein may play an important role in maintaining vision and preventing such eye diseases as age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2000 identified lutein as possibly helping to prevent colon cancer.
