5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is an amino acid made in the body from tryptophan and converted to serotonin, an important brain chemical. Raising brain levels of serotonin through 5-HTP supplements may positively impact sleep, mood, anxiety, aggression, appetite, temperature, sexual behavior and pain sensations.
5-HTP may be beneficial for supporting a variety of conditions associated with low serotonin levels. Depression may result from low serotonin levels. Because of this, many anti-depressant medications work to raise serotonin levels. In studies of people with mild to moderate depression, 5-HTP may be as effective as some medications at improving mood, anxiety, insomnia, and physical symptoms.
The pain, stiffness, and fatigue of fibromyalgia may be impacted by a number of factors but studies show low serotonin may play a role in the development of fibromyalgia. Individuals with fibromyalgia taking 5-HTP saw improvements in sleep and a reduction of pain, stiffness and depression.
Other research shows patients suffering with insomnia may benefit from 5-HTP supplementation. Taking it before bedtime may induce sleepiness and delay waking up. Studies of overweight men and women, both with and without diabetes, suggested 5-HTP supplements promoted the feeling of satiety (fullness). This led to a decrease in food intake and subsequent weight loss.
In addition to 5-HTP our formula includes Vitamin C and Vitamin B6. These vitamins are important for optimizing the effects of 5-HTP.
