More than 25 strains of red marine algae (RMA) are known to contain natural antiviral and immunomodulatory agents. Difficulty lies in finding the species of RMA that are potent enough to be effective, for antiviral strength varies widely among the various algae based on their varying content of sulfated polysaccharides. It is thought the active agents are sulfated polysaccharides, which are complex sugars that contain sulfur. Carrageenan and other gel-like substances are derived from this family of polysaccharides. Research is still incomplete, but we know that several RMAs significantly interfere with the infectivity of Herpes simplex I and II, influenza, and HIV, and that those strains are rich in sulfated polysaccharides.
