Pau d’Arco is an evergreen tree grown in the warmth of Central and South America particularly in the Amazon rain forest. The inner bark of the tree has been used for medicinal purposes by South Americans for centuries. During the 1960’s, its potential benefits became more widely known and investigated in the medical community.
Researchers continued to be interested in Pau d’Arco and eventually identified more than 20 active chemicals. By increasing oxygen levels in cells, Pau d’Arco helped destroy bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses. It also showed promising effectiveness on dysentery, strep, yeast infections and malaria. Perhaps its greatest promise comes in its believed ability to boost the immune system. Further research is examining its anti-inflammatory abilities.
