- Powerful antioxidant properties.
- Assists immune response.
Vitamin E in the form of alpha-tocopherol is a powerful antioxidant. The body’s normal metabolism forms free radicals during and also upon exposure to environmental factors. Through oxidation, free radicals attack the lipid structure of the cell membrane, which are vulnerable. The fat-soluble vitamin, alpha-tocopherol, intercepts the attack of free radicals and prevents the continuation of a chain reaction that destroys the cell membrane. Alpha-tocopherol also protects the necessary transport of fats through the blood stream via low density lipoproteins (LDLs) by preventing oxidation. Oxidized LDLs may contribute to the development of cardiovascular diseases.
Another function of alpha-tocopherol may be to affect the formulation and action of immune and inflammatory cells. Additionally, alpha-tocopherol has been shown to suppress platelet aggregation and to increase vasodilation.
