Boils are caused by hair follicles becoming inflamed. This causes pus and dead tissues to build up. They are red, pus-filled, and painful lumps that can be quite large in appearance At the point that the boil is ready to break, one can see a white spot at the center. In a severe buildup, boils can spread. It is possible to an infected individual to experience fever and swollen lymph glands.
