While some thinner people are healthy, those who lose weight suddenly without reason may have cause to be concerned. If a person in underweight, a number of factors may be involved - traumatic events, poor nutrition, stress, surgery, parasites, or other underlying disorders.

Advice
- Avoid caffeine from all sources including coffee, tea, and soft drinks.
- Avoid smoking.
- Consider testing yourself for food allergies. If you notices a reaction to certain foods, eliminate them from your diet.
- Consume 300 grams of complex carbohydrates, 100 grams of protein, and a total of 2,500-3,000 calories daily. Potatoes, beans, turkey, chicken, fish, whole-grains, eggs, avocados, safflower oil, raw cheeses, nuts, seeds, olive oil are recommended as part of your diet.
- Do not allow large amounts of food to overwhelm you. Instead, break up your meals and snacks into small, manageable portions.
- Herbal teas, mineral water, and fruit and vegetable juices are recommended.
- Light regular exercise is beneficial for boosting the appetite.
- Rapid or unintentional weight loss should be brought to a doctor's attention, especially when a child is losing weight.
- Stay away from fried foods and junk food. The following foods are good high-calorie snacks: banana soy pudding; raw nuts; raw cheese; sandwiches with turkey, chicken, or tuna with cheese; rice crackers and nut butter; custard; avocados; almond milk; buttermilk; yogurt fruit shakes; yogurt; and carob soymilk.
- Talk to your doctor if you think your weight loss or loss of appetite may be linked to medications you are taking.
- Try to relax when you are eating.
- When eating soup, make sure it is a soy-based cream soup. Simply substitute the soymilk for cow's milk.
- You may want to be evaluated for eating disorders if you are thin, but feel you should lose weight. This could be a sign of Anorexia Nervosa or Bulimia.
