Varicose Veins usually appear large, blue, and bulging and are often painful. They occur when the veins are stretched because they are not working properly. They are mainly caused by poor circulation.

  • Applying pressure to the legs with a compression garment can help relieve symptoms.
  • Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) can help with swelling and pain.
  • Massaging the areas around the problem veins may be beneficial. Avoid massaging the veins directly.
  • One option for treatment is vein stripping. It renders the vein useless, and it can be quite painful.
  • Rectal itching, pain, and bloody stool may indicate anal or rectal varicose veins (also known as hemorrhoids).
  • Restoring the valve through valve repair may be beneficial.
  • Sclerotherapy can shrink veins, but it may cause complications.

Advice


  • Avoid tight clothing that can inhibit blood flow. Supportive elastic stockings are helpful for varicose veins and for controlling the swelling.
  • Blackberries and cherries are beneficial for those with varicose veins.
  • Do not scratch the area around the varicose vein. Ulceration and bleeding may result.
  • Ginger, garlic, onions, and pineapple should be a part of your diet.
  • Good ways to take some of the pressure off of your legs if you have to stand a lot are standing on your toes, putting weight on one foot and then the other, and taking walks.
  • Include enough fiber to keep you from becoming constipated and to cleanse the bowels.
  • Putting castor oil on varicose veins and then rubbing the oil into your legs (toward your heart) can be beneficial.
  • Sit or lie down for 20 minutes with your feet higher than your heart.
  • Stand in a tub of cold water and pretend you are walking. This exercise can help alleviate pain and enhance circulation.
  • Stay at an acceptable weight. Exercise regularly. Move your legs to improve circulation. Walking, bicycling, and swimming are recommended.
  • Stay away from processed and refined foods, fried foods, cheese, peanuts, sugar, ice cream, salt, tobacco, junk food, and alcohol.
  • The following homeopathic remedies can help with symptoms: Pulsatilla, Ferrum metallicum, and Hamamelis virginiana.
  • To enhance circulation, move your legs and toes around while you are sitting. Be sure stand up and walk around every hour if your job entails sitting at a desk all day. It is also beneficial to put your feet up when sitting down.
  • Try not to cross your legs, lift heavy things, or strain your legs with unnecessary pressure. Do not sit or stand in the same position for long periods of time.
  • Whenever you sit down, put your feet up.
  • Your diet should consist of fresh fruits and vegetables, along with a lot of fish. Avoid too much fat or refined carbohydrates.
