Wilson's Disease

About

Wilson's Disease is a rare disease in which a person cannot process copper properly so it acquires in his kidneys, liver, corneas, and brain. This can affect the individual neurologically and psychologically. Fortunately, treatments are available.

Notes

  • A psychologist may be able to help with any personality changes that occur.
  • For extra support, consider contacting the Wilson's Disease Association.
  • High levels of copper may indicate problems other than Wilson's Disease, especially if liver and corneas are normal.
  • If you have a family member who has had Wilson's disease, consider being tested as soon as possible in order to determine if treatment is necessary.
  • Penicillamine may be prescribed to help manage this disease. It helps in the elimination of copper from the body. Side effects are tamed by steroids. Trientine is another option for disease management.
  • This disease can only be managed, not prevented or cured.
  • Visit your doctor regularly to make sure you are keeping the disease under control.
  • Vitamin C and zinc levels are diminished when copper level is high. Supplementation with these two nutrients may be necessary.
  • Zinc may help counterbalance the copper. Your doctor can prescribe zinc acetate for you if he deems it helpful. Follow his directions for taking it.

Advice

  • Choose a multivitamin and/or mineral supplement without copper.
  • Do not consume caffeine if you experience tremors.
  • Make sure the water in your home has non-toxic levels of copper (less than 1 part per million of copper). Consume bottled water instead of tap water if copper levels are too high. Some pipes can contribute to high copper levels in water. Consider replacing them if you are sure that is the source.
  • Refrain from alcohol.
  • The bromelain in pineapple helps ease inflammation and swelling. Fresh pineapple is best.
  • The following foods contain high levels of copper and should be avoided: nuts, organ meats, salmon, shellfish, avocados, beets, enriched cereals, barley, blackstrap molasses, chocolate, broccoli, beans, legumes, oats, egg yolks, pecans, oranges, soybeans, raisins, green leafy vegetables, lentils, garlic, mushrooms, liver, and whole grains.
  • To help the body eliminate copper, obtain sulfur through eating onions.
  • Use cookware and utensils that are copper-free.
