Lactose Intolerance (Lactase Deficiency)
A person who is lactose intolerant cannot properly digest milk sugar (lactose). Instead, the milk sugar remains undigested in the colon and ferments causing gas, bloating, cramps, and diarrhea. This disorder is more common in adults, though it can occur in children.

- Milk allergy is not lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance is not being able to digest milk sugar.

- Consuming a lot of water will help during an attack. Avoid solid food.
- Make sure the medications you are taking are free of lactose. Your pharmacist would be able to tell you.
- Obtain calcium through supplements or calcium rich foods such as broccoli, apricots, blackstrap molasses, dried figs, collard greens, kale, calcium-fortified orange juice, salmon, rhubarb, spinach, tofu, sardines, and yogurt.
- Pregnant women who have lactose intolerance in their family history should either breastfeed their babies or use a soy-based or other nondairy formula.
- Watch for the words "milk solid" or "lactose" on labels. Stay away from those foods. The following foods may contain lactose: processed meats, salad dressing, breads, flavored coffees, cookies, canned and powdered soups, pancake mixes, and processed foods.
- Yogurt cultures help it digest and make it a tolerable food. Homemade yogurt is recommended. Yogurt should have live cultures in it.
- Yogurt is the only acceptable form of dairy products. Soymilk, Rice Dream, and soy cheeses are good substitutes for dairy products. Foods with lactose are especially irritating when consumed on an empty stomach.
